An eye for Content Design - Transforming User Experience
Project Overview
As an Information Developer at VMware, I led a project to significantly enhance the user experience of SaaS release notes, showcasing my expertise in content design, strategy, and user-centric problem-solving.
The Curiosity That Sparked Change
Have you ever wondered if anyone actually reads software release notes? I did, and the answer led me on an unexpected journey of discovery and innovation at VMware.
The Challenge
- Fast-paced SaaS releases required frequent updates to release notes
- Existing left navigation design resulted in an endless scroll, compromising user experience
- Need to balance rapid content creation with optimal user accessibility
Peeling Back the Layers: A Data-Driven Approach
- Analyzed user behavior:
- Release notes comprised 1% of product documentation but accounted for 14% of traffic
- Only 20% of users utilized left navigation; 80% relied on search engines
- Challenged status quo:
- Despite initial resistance due to perceived low ROI, pursued improvements for the 20% of users
- Hypothesized that low usage of left navigation was due to poor user experience
From Ignored to Adored: Crafting a Solution
- Collaborated with UX and design teams to create a frugal accordion-style navigation
- Implemented a new design system that grouped releases, eliminating endless scrolling
- Broadened skillset by learning about AX platform backend and UX element coding
Results and Impact
- Conducted A/B testing with overwhelmingly positive user feedback
- Successfully implemented the new accordion design system
- Created a distinct, user-friendly interface for Workspace ONE UEM release notes
- Design has remained in place for over 4 years, setting VMware Workspace ONE UEM's release notes apart from the remaining products
What This Journey Taught Me
This project showcases my ability to:
- Identify and solve complex content strategy problems
- Use data-driven insights to guide decision-making
- Collaborate across teams (UX, design, development)
- Take initiative on high-impact projects outside of standard responsibilities
- Balance user needs with technical constraints and business goals
By transforming VMware's release notes experience, I demonstrated how strategic content design can significantly enhance product usability and user satisfaction.
